Abstract |
The New Zealand-born conductor Harry Norris (1887-1979) was musical director of London's D'Oyly Carte Opera Company (1920 to 1929) when he immigrated to Montreal in 1929. He taught at McGill University until 1933, when he became engaged full-time directing amateur Gilbert and Sullivan operatic societies. Norris was a founding member of the Montreal West Operatic Society, conducted music for Lachine's St Paul's Operatic Society, was Director of Instrumental Studies in the Orchestral Scheme of the Protestant Board of School Commissioners of the City of Montreal, and was musical director for the Montreal West United Church of Canada. He and his wife retired to England in 1963.
