Abstract |
A demographic analysis of the inter-provincial migration patterns of Francophone, Anglophone and Allophone Quebecers in the period 1981-1991, especially in relation to the Greater Montreal region. By the late 1980s, the author points out, Montreal showed a migratory deficit of 68,000 Francophones, while the off-island (north and south shore) communities benefited from this Francophone migratory movement. Compared to Francophones, the author points out that Anglophones were underrepresented in the interregional migrations of the 1980s. Less than 32,000 Anglophones migrated from one region of Quebec to another in the early 1980s, and this number rose slightly to nearly 41,000 during the five-year period 1986-1991. Greater Montreal benefited from this inter-provincial migration of Anglophones. Only 8,100 Allophones migrated within Quebec between 1981 and 1986; this number rose to 14,000 over the next five years. Most stayed on the island of Montreal.
