Abstract |
As more and more Francophones moved to the suburbs off the island of Montreal, non-Francophones (Allophones and Anglophones) remained on the island. Between 1981 and 1986, the off-Montreal island Francophone population increased by 9.4 percent compared to only 0.9 percent on the island. The author focuses on the higher birth rate of the city's Allophone population compared to the Francophone population, and the integration of the Allophone population into the Francophone population as a result of Bill 101 (the Charter of the French Language).
