Abstract |
The Red Sashes were a Missisquoi County home guard militia, formed in 1868 following the 1866 invasion of the county by Irish American Fenians. The Red Sashes repulsed the Fenians during a six-hour seige at the Battle of Eccles Hill when the Irish Americans once again invaded the county on May 25, 1870. The Red Sashes were armed with the then latest version of the breech loading Ballard rifle. The location of the Battle of Eccles Hill, outside the village of Frelighsburg, is now a National Historic Site.
