Abstract |
The development of children's libraries in Quebec began in 1911 at Westmount Public Library, the first to introduce such a speciality section within a conventional library. The first library dedicated to children was the Montreal Children's Library, founded in 1929. The authors point out that these libraries were "Anglo-Saxon" institutions. In 1937, the Bibliothèque des enfants was established in the Hochelaga section of Montreal. Focusing on Francophone libraries, the authors examine the debate accompanying the development of children's libraries in Quebec up to the end of the 1950s, and answer the following questions: What were the aims pursued by these children's libraries, at least according to the written records that were kept? What ideologies and motivations were current among the library promoters? How were these librariess' influence on children described? How did one see the role of the librarian?
