Title
Dimensions sociales de la mortalité infantile à Montréal au milieu du XIXe siècle
Abstract
Studying the 1859 infant mortality rate in Montreal, the authors conclude that the parents' ethno-cultural identity was a more powerful determinant that the father's occupation, household rent, or characteristics of habitat and neighbourhood. Mortality of French-Canadian Catholic infants (27.6%) exceeded that of English Protestant infants (18.6%) and Irish Catholic infants (20%), despite the miserable living conditions of Irish immigrants. Half of all deaths occurred during the summer. Factors that may contribute to an explanation of the differences are age of weaning of the infant, differential fertility, and the inadequacy of urban infrastructure.
