Demographic Components of the Francisation of Rural Quebec: The Case of Rawdon
|
Abstract |
An empirical examination of the processes by which a rural area of Quebec, the Lanaudière village of Rawdon, originally settled by Anglophones became increasingly francisised. Rawdon Township was established in 1799 and its residents were primarily of Irish background until 1844, when French-Canadians began moving into the area. Today, Francophones comprise over eighty percent of Rawdon's population. The author undertook a demographic examination in the 1970s looking at migration, marriage and the number of children living to adulthood.
