Retail, Religion and Rinks: Montreal at Christmas, 1865
Abstract
On December 25, 1865, the Montreal Gazette issued a special Christmas holiday supplement in its daily newspaper. The author analyzes the supplement to describe the celebration of Christmas in Montreal in the latter half of the nineteenth century, from gift ideas at local stores, to the downtown churches where Montrealers could celebrate Christmas services, to a recreational arena called "Guilbault's Glaciarum" on St. Urbain Street, north of Sherbrooke, were locals could go skating.
