Pouvoir et perception : une communauté irlandaise au Québec au dix-neuvième siècle

Abstract |
An explanation of how Irish Catholics in nineteenth century St. Sylvestre managed to antagonize both their French Catholic and Irish Protestant neighbours. An analysis of agricultural success, based on data from census manuscripts, indicates that Irish Catholics in St. Sylvestre were falling farther and farther behind the Irish Protestants and French Canadians in the parish. Their standing in the community diminished. The author argues that in terms of power relations, Irish Catholics failed to assimilate into the rural French Canadian society, or to establish a niche for themselves socially and politically compared to their Irish Protestants neighbours.
