De la lecture à la bibliophilie : Villeneuve Publications ou l’édition artisanale anglo-québécoise
|
Abstract |
The author examines the impact of small-scale and specialized printing presses on the reading conditions of the poetry published by Villeneuve Publications, a small, Montreal-based private press active from 1976 to 1987. She offers an overview of the history of certain specialized presses, from their British origins to their ongoing presence in the French- and English-Canadian cultural landscape, and outlines the evolution and the publishing activities of Villeneuve publishers Robyn Sarah, an English Quebec poet and short-story writer, and Fred Louder, printer and typographer. By studying privately printed poetry chapbooks as cultural products and as elements of bibliophile pursuits, the author invites readers to reflect on the connections which unite the material quality of a book, its readability and its monetary and symbolic value. Finally, the author draws parallels between traditional publishing like that of the publishers of Villeneuve Publications and those of Anglophone private presses publishing in the Québécois tradition of artistic and fine books.
