Abstract
The British-born Edith Clara Sophia Hemming (1849-1931) moved to Canada in 1852 when she was three years old. Her father worked as the financial controller for the construction of the Victoria Bridge in Montreal. Edith Hemming lived in various cities in Quebec and Ontario. In Quebec City she worked for the Livernois photographic studio where she hand-painted photographs with watercolours. Examples of these can be found in the Livernois Collection at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. Hemming moved to Toronto in 1896, and returned to Montreal in 1903. The author outlines Hemming's career at the Livernois photographic studio, as well as her later career as a painter.
