| Abstract |
At the turn of the twentieth century, Montreal's elite, both Anglophone and Francophone, recognized that the city's growth could be better managed through planning or, as the concept later became known, "urbanism". The author traces the contribution of new specialists in urban planning who set out to prepare the advent of Montreal as a modern and prosperous metropolis. The author outlines the emergence and affirmation of an urban planning community in Montreal. He points out that from the beginning of the twentieth century, urbanism was characterized by an unprecedented combination: the quest for professional status, the constitution of an applied academic discipline through the development of "urban studies", and the broadening of a field of public intervention.
