Orientations culturelles dans les mariages entre canadiens français et canadien anglais
Abstract
The author notes that the marriage arrangements between French Montrealers and English Montrealers is a situation requiring accommodation since the two cultural systems define the activities undertaken in common by the couple. The author examined the arrangements of 59 couples who married in 1951 where the man is an Anglophone and the woman a Francophone, and 57 couples married the same year where the man is a Francophone and the woman an Anglophone. Her basic hypothesis was that the choices required by their accommodation were not made haphazardly but reveals the weak and the strong points of both cultures. The author’s analysis of the cultural orientation of the spouses in different behaviour sectors tends to confirm her hypothesis. She concludes that the orientation towards the English culture is predominant in those sectors that can be termed " modern " and centered on power. The attachment to the French culture remains strong in as far as the community life is concerned.
