Remembering War in Imperial Canada: David Ross McCord and The McCord National Museum
Abstract
David Ross McCord (1844-1930) was an ardent Canadian imperialist who believed that war strengthened both individual manliness and national character. He became an obsessive collector, determined to establish a national museum of history. Among McCord’s collection were thousands of objects relating to the battle of the Plains of Abraham, the Defence of Quebec, the War of 1812, the Rebellion of 1837, the Northwest Rebellions, the Boer War and the First World War. His collection eventually became the McCord Museum of Canadian History/Le Musée McCord d’histoire canadienne, today known as the McCord-Stewart Museum.
