Abstract
A critical analysis of Montreal poet Irving Layton's (1912-2006) work and character. Among the phrases used by the author to describe Layton are: a confident egotist, his misanthropy is Swiftian, his early poetry is not coherent wholes, being too clotted, over-detailed, combining clumsy syntax with an overplus of material, etc. etc.
