Abstract
Montreal poet A.J.M. Smith (1902-1980) was also an editor, critic, anthologist and literary historian. The author points out that Smith "belongs to the small handful of principal shapers of Canada's poetic tradition." But, he further notes, Smith's poetry "is more read than enjoyed." The author examines why Smith's poetry was never popular, notwithstanding his influence on the genre. One major reason "may be due to the strategies this strongminded critic and editor of other writers' works has chosen, over the years since the mid-1920's, for arranging and presenting his own verse to the public. He has encouraged his readers to read his poetry in his way, or not at all." The author examines Smith's approach to his poetry,
