La nuit de feu des livres et des archives du Parlement
|
Abstract |
The author focuses on the history of the Parliament Library when it was located in Montreal and considers the void it left after being destroyed in the fire, set by rioting English-speaking Tories, that burned down the Parliament building on April 25, 1849. The library's founding in 1802, its function and reputation, and its two collections including the one for the Legislative Assembly and the one for the Legislative Council are discussed. Topics addressed include the library's first catalog published in 1811, journalist and librarian Étienne Parent who published a new catalog in 1835, and writings in which the library is evoked after its destruction, including the novel "Jean Rivard, économiste" (1877) by Antoine Gérin-Lajoie (1824-1882).
