Abstract |
Includes a list of all mayors of Montreal from 1833 to 1954, along with birth dates, terms of office, and professions. A few biographical sketches are supplied, including that of Charles Wilson (1808-1877), mayor from 1851 to 1854, and his association with the 1853 "Gavazzi Riot". Five people were killed when protesters, mostly Irish Catholics who opposed the anti-Catholic lecture given by Alessandro Gavazzi in the city and tried to storm the hall where Gavazzi was speaking. The British garrison stationed at Montreal was called out and the soldiers opened fire on the protesters.
