Abstract |
From the 1920s, Montreal’s Saint Lawrence Boulevard was the main line of demarcation between the more prosperous English-speaking Jews and the Yiddish-speaking Ashkenazi Jews. This latter group was made-up of recent immigrants of poor or modest standing. On the eastern side of the boulevard, the Ashkenazi community lived in relative harmony with workers of several nationalities and faiths, bonded by their common economic situation. On the western side of the boulevard was the “shtetl Saint Urbain”, a predominately Jewish enclave in which the lower middle-class population enjoyed better economic conditions. However, on the western side, anti-Semitism and racism from the French-Canadian population was widespread. Nevertheless, the author points out that the inhabitants on the east side aspired to move to the west.
