Title
Race, Marriage, and Family Formation in the Registers of the St. Gabriel Street Presbyterian Church, Montreal, 1790-1830
Abstract
The author notes that the predominance of legal history in the literature on early 19th century Quebec has silenced racialized and marginalized individuals and communities, who are often absent from or underrepresented in modern historical narratives. Her in-depth analysis of church records has the potential to create a space within the historiography for voices that have been previously silenced by both the literature and the archives. The author’s case study of the St. Gabriel Street Presbyterian Church’s registers reveals how a critical analysis of church records can provide invaluable insight into the complexity of family formation and the racial dynamics of marriages in early 19th century Montreal. Through a selection of specific, meticulously chosen examples of marriages recorded in the St. Gabriel Church registers, the author explores how racial, gender, and religious identities were articulated, constructed, and navigated through relationships, and the way in which concepts of race, gender, and religious faith impacted how people engaged with intimacy and marriage.
