Title
The Presbyterian Church in Western Lower Canada, 1815-1842
Abstract
The history of the Presbyterian parishes in Montreal and surrounding counties, both to the north and in the Eastern Townships. Emphasis is placed on the ethnic origins (Scottish, Irish, American) of the parishioners and of the areas of settlement in the early nineteenth century. Because various branches of the Presbyterian Church took root in Canada at that time, the author notes the changing relationship of a Canadian branch to its mother church in Scotland, to the United States branches, and to the interrelationship of one branch to another. Denominational structures, Presbyteries and Synods are touched on briefly. The author also outlines the part played by the Glasgow Colonial Society and the American Home Missionary Society in securing ministers for Canada.
