Abstract |
Katherine Jane Ellice (1813-1864) was the wife of Edward Ellice the Younger, private secretary to Lord Durham, newly appointed Governor General of British North America. Jane Ellice came to Lower Canada in May 1838 with the Durham entourage. Her husband's family had established fur trading and merchant connections in North America since the 1770s, and since 1795 were the seigneurs of Beauharnois on the south shore of the St. Lawrence, west of Montreal. The diary is an account of the eight months she spent in Lower Canada and the United States, including a terrifying week she was held prisoner by Patriotes at the Beauharnois seigniory in November 1838. The introduction by Ms. Godsell includes a short biography of Edward Ellice the Younger, his father Edward, and his grandfather Alexander.
