La seigneurie de Beauharnois, 1729-1854 : les seigneurs, l'espace et l'argent
Abstract
First granted in 1729, the Seigniory of Beauharnois passed from French aristocrats (Beauharnois) to French Canadian aristocrats (Lotbinière) to upper class British merchants (Ellice), all of whom were absentee landlords. Alexander Ellice (1743-1805) purchased the 324 square mile, largely undeveloped Seigniory of Villechauvre, commonly called Beauharnois, on July 30, 1795. He also acquired most of the neighbouring townships of Godmanchester and Hinghinbrook. Upon Alexander Ellice's death, his son Edward (1783-1863) inherited the seigniory. The property passed out of the Ellice family in 1866. Colonization of the seigniory only began in earnest after 1820 with the arrival of American and British settlers.
