Seigneurial Survey and Land Granting Policies
Abstract
Gabriel Christie (1722-1799), a British officer stationed in Montreal after the Conquest, acquired five seigneuries in the Upper Richelieu Valley. They remained in the Christie family until after the seigneurial system was abolished in 1854. The author outlines the survey and land granting policies for two of the seigneuries (Delery and Lacolle) between 1785 and 1820.
