Abstract |
In 1870, Irish American Fenians crossed the Canada-US border into the Eastern Townships County of Missisquoi for a second time (the first having taken place in 1866) in order to capture Canada and exchange its release for the liberation of British-held Ireland. A battle ensued at Eccles Hill between the Fenians and the local Missisquoi militia, known as the Red Sashes. The author tells the story of two soldiers involved in the 1870 invasion at Eccles Hill (now part of the village of Frelighsburg) -- the Fenian John Rowe (1845-1870) and Alexander “Sandy” Bronson (1828-1928) of the 52nd Brome Volunteer Battalion, No. 6 Company. Both are linked together in history because of two photographs taken following the battle, one of John Rowe lying dead on a road near Eccles Hill and the other of Alexander Bronson standing sentry over Rowe's temporary grave near the battle site. The author tells the story of these two men and how each became involved in the skirmish at the now designated The Battle of Eccles Hill National Historic Site.
