Freligsburg dans la tourmente : les invasions irlandaises de juin 1866 et mai 1870
Abstract
A bilingual account of the two armed invasions into the Eastern Townships by the Fenian Brotherhood, an Irish American-based secret society of U.S. Civil War veterans whose aim was to capture British interests in North America and exchange them for the liberation of Ireland from British domination. The first invasion took place in June 1866, when the Fenians plundered and sacked the Missisquoi County village of Frelighsburg and its surroundings before being driven back across the border by cavalry arriving by train from Montreal. The second invasion took place in May 1870 when the Americans crossed the border at Eccles Hill, near Frelighsburg, and engaged in an armed battle with the local militia of farmers, known as the Red Sashes, and militia battalions from neighbouring counties and Montreal. The Fenians were again driven back to the United States.
