Abstract |
The author points out that Hollywood actor, director, producer and studio head Mack Sennett (1880-1960) was born in Richmond, Quebec. Sennett was baptized Michael Sinnott in the Eastern Townships parish of Sainte-Bibiane-de-Richmond, where he spent the first eighteen years of his life before immigrating to the United States in 1898. Founder of the Keystone studio in Hollywood (1912), he produced more than 675 burlesque-style films between 1911 and 1949. Nicknamed the “King of Comedy”, Sennett notably launched the cinematographic career of Charlie Chaplin, among many others. The author points out that the civil status register, which contains Mack Sennett's (Michael Sinnott) baptismal certificate, is kept at the Sherbrooke office of the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (CE501, S6).
