Abstract
The author tracks the special relationship between the Atlantic salmon and the people of the St. John River (La rivière Saint-Jean) on the Lower North Shore of Quebec through diaries, legal documents, scientific data, rare archival photographs and her own photographic collection. Ontario-born railroad magnate James J. Hill (1838-1916) established a log camp on the St. John River in 1889 and it has remained in the family for five generations.
