| Abstract |
The author analyzes the economic decline in an Anglophone fishing village in the Gaspé in the early 1970s, set against its historical and regional perspective in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. He found that in the "traditional economy" period ending in the 1930s, the people of this community, though in part dependent upon fish merchants, pursued a balanced exploitation of local environmental resources. After the Second World War these resources no longer satisfied the villagers' needs, and the villagers became largely dependent upon government "transfer payments". Finding themselves a minority amongst a French-speaking majority, the author notes that the English-speaking villagers were isolated from many aspects of regional life. Thus, he concludes, a sense of alienation and frustration compounded the economic difficulties of the community.
