Grosse Ile: Island of the Dead
|
Abstract |
Grosse Île, south of Quebec City, was established under military command as a quarantine station in 1832 to cope with an epidemic of cholera expected to sweep into Lower Canada from Europe via Irish immigrants. Fifteen years later, the station was used to help stop the rampant epidemic of typhus brought to the colony by boat-loads of Irish immigrants.
