Volume One provides a glimpse of the social and political state of Canada East (Quebec) in the early 1860s, as viewed by a British visitor. Samuel Phillips Day (1833-1916) gives a description of Quebec City and Montreal, their inhabitants, politics, newspapers, universities and lunatic asylums, as well as the industrial resources of Montreal.
