Abstract |
A social and military history of the British regiments stationed in Quebec City between 1760 and 1871. The author points out that these soldiers were the product of different social circumstances and places in the British military hierarchy, and left a definite imprint on the city during their stay. Military actors, musicians and sportsmen performed on stage and on the playing fields. Soldiers apprehended criminals, fought fires and designed public buildings. They frequented brothels and taverns, robbed and assaulted civilians, were imprisoned in the Quebec prison, tried in civilian court, and could be found drunk or sober in the streets at all hours of the day or night.
