Abstract |
An essay on the first newspapers in Lower Canada between 1764 and 1840. The author explains how, after 1805, newspaper publishing in the colony changed dramatically with the introduction of the political press. Thomas Cary’s Quebec Mercury, a defender of the ideas and interests of the English-speaking merchant class, was among the first such political partisan paper when it appeared in January 1805. Between 1805 and 1840, there were at least sixty-six political newspapers in Lower Canada, a slight majority of them in the English language.
