Abstract
The Irish-born Edward Cannon (1739-1814) moved to Quebec City with his family from St. John's, Newfoundland, in 1795. A master-mason and businessman, Cannon undertook to do the masonry for the Holy Trinity Cathedral at Quebec. The foundation stone for the Anglican church was blessed on August 11, 1800, and Cannon finished the work and the church consecrated on August 28, 1804. Cannon was also the mason for the Morgan building, formerly the Hôtel Union, on the Place d’Armes, and, with his son John, for Morrin College, originally Quebec City's jail.
