Abstract
The Scottish-born physician and surgeon James Douglas (1800-1886) set up practice in Quebec City in 1826 where he quickly acquired a large clientele. In 1837 he was given charge of the city's 300-bed Marine and Emigrant Hospital, and in 1845 Douglas established the Beaufort Asylum for the province's mentally ill, the first of its kind in Quebec.

The editor, James Douglas, Jr., wrote the following concerning this book: "The following sketch of the life of my father is in part autobiographical and part drawn from my own recollections." Two hundred and fifty copies of the book were printed for private distribution.
