Abstract |
The Polish-born author arrived in Montreal in 1909 at the age of 17, at a time when the Yiddish language and culture was beginning to blossom in the city. He participated in the founding of the city's first Yiddish school, on Prince Arthur Street, in 1913. The school was referred to as Peretz school after a well-known East-European Yiddish writer. The school defended a resolutely secular, revolutionary and Zionist vision, with Yiddish occupying the status of the Jewish national language.
