Title
The Importance of Being English?: Identity and Social Organisation in British Montreal, 1800-1850
Abstract
An examination of the key role that identity played in English-speaking Montreal society in the first half of the nineteenth century. Through such organizations as churches, clubs, societies and dinners, the elite English-speaking population commemorated and celebrated their British culture. The author argues that this population used particular identities as mechanisms for social control, defence in times of unrest, and to form community networks.
