Abstract
The Rivière-du-Loup-born John McLoughlin (1784-1857) was a physician by training but a fur trader and later merchant by occupation. In 1803 he joined the Montreal-based North West Company and by 1814 was a partner in that enterprise. When the Hudson's Bay Company and the North West Company merged in 1821, McLoughlin joined the HBS and in 1824 became its Chief Factor and Superintendent of the Columbia District. He later became known as the "Father of Oregon" and in the late 1840s his general store in Oregon City was famous as the last stop on the Oregon Trail.
