Abstract
In 1881, the German-born Charlotte Führer published The Mysteries of Montreal: Being Recollections of a Female Physician, a melodramatic account of her life as a midwife for over thirty years in the city. The author examines the book in relation to what is known about obstetrical practices in Montreal in the late nineteenth century.
