Canadian Marconi: CFCF Television, From Signal Hill to the Canadian Television Network
Abstract
An examination of the Canadian Marconi Company (CMC), the first private broadcaster in Canada, founded by Gugliemo Marconi (1874-1937) in 1903. CMC applied for a television licence in 1938, but was rejected because the federal government had no policy on TV broadcasting at that time. After the war, CMC applied for TV licences every year but was rejected until 1960. CMC finally received a licence in 1960, and Montreal's CFCF-TV went on the air in 1961.
