Abstract |
An examination of the transmission of the Hindu religious identity in a migration context within the Sri Lankan Tamil community in Montreal. The author examines the values that some adults, all born in Sri Lanka, want to be passed on to their children who will be part of the second generation of the community. Arguing that religion plays a major role for the newcomer and constitutes an essential strategy enabling the immigrant to maintain a continuity of identity, the author concludes that religious practice serves as powerful vehicles for the intergenerational transmission of a whole range of identity, both cultural and linguistic, but also moral.
