Jeunes femmes et loisirs commerciaux durant les années folles (1919-1929) : étude des discours ecclésiastiques et journalistiques

Abstract |
An examination of the religious (French Catholic) and journalistic (French and English) reactions towards young Montreal women participating in commercial leisure activities (theatre and movies, dancing and sports) in the 1920s. Using religious pronouncements, Montreal newspapers, including the Herald and the McGill Daily, as well as Eaton's and Dupuis Frères department store catalogues, the author examines how Montreal society looked on young women participating in these activities. Although both the Anglophone and Francophone press expressed concerns about the cinema and dancing, the Anglophone press approved of women's participation in sports, unlike their Francophone counterparts.
