Title
P.-J.-O. Chauveau et les débuts de la chambre des arts et manufactures du Bas-Canada 1857-1872
Abstract
The author outlines, with a slightly disparaging tone, the role played by English speakers in the creation and running of the Quebec Board of Arts and Manufacture. She points out that between 1857 and 1866, twenty-seven of the twenty-nine successive leaders of the Board were English speakers, most of them delegates from the Mechanics' Institute of Montreal. After Confederation, when the Board of Arts and Manufacture fell under provincial jurisdiction, more French speakers became involved, although few were attached to the "bourgeoisie commerçante et industrielle" as were most of the English-speaking delegates. These latter delegates are described by the author as Protestants, except for a few Irish, and mostly Presbyterians. The French speakers were all Catholics, with a few being ultramontainists.
