Abstract |
In May 1920, the Self Determination for Ireland League of Canada and Newfoundland, an Irish republican organization, was founded in Montreal. The author describes the founding and evolution of this organization, focusing on the clash within the city's Irish nationalist movement between supporters who favoured constitutional autonomy for Ireland and those who favoured Irish republicanism. The author also examines the support given this organization by members of French Quebec's elite, including Omer Héroux, Armand Lavergne and Henri Bourassa.
