Abstract
John Meehan (1841-1864) was hanged on March 22, 1864, for the September 11, 1863 murder of Patrick Pearl during a fight outside a tavern on Saint-Vallier Street, in the Saint-Roch suburb of Quebec City. Meehan's was the last public hanging in Quebec City, witnessed, according to newspaper accounts, by between 5,000 and 8,000 people. The Governor General, Lord Monk, refused to commute Meehan's sentence, on the recommendation of Attorney General Antoine-Aimé Dorion.
