Le patrimoine de la famille et des entreprises Breakey : la reconnaissance d’un héritage anglo-protestant par la communauté lévisienne
Abstract
The author outlines her research into the history and heritage of the Breakey family. This Irish Protestant Quebec family which lived in Breakeyville (today integrated within the city of Lévis), settled on the south shore of Quebec in the 1830s and worked in the wood trade (timber and later pulp and paper) for over a hundred years. The author was interested in the historical context in which the Breakey family evolved. This context, placing the Breakey family and Breakeyville's development in the historical fabric of the timber trade on the entire south shore of Quebec City, also highlights the story of an Anglo-Protestant family that made a fortune while employing mostly French Catholic workers. Her article concludes with a summary of the inventories and the surveys of the Breakey estate, as well as the conservation and enhancement options proposed for this heritage.
