Abstract |
A sociological study undertaken by Herbert Brown Ames (1863-1954) in 1897 of the working-class districts of Pointe St. Charles and Griffintown. Ames examined such issues as employment, family composition, wages and family incomes, density and overcrowding, death rates, and nationalities and religion. According to Ames' statistics, there were 7671 families or 37,652 individuals living in the "city below the hill" at the time of his survey, of which the majority, fifty-five percent, were English Quebecers of Irish and British descent. Of the remaining residents, forty-two percent were French Quebecers and three percent were of other nationalities. The average weekly family income in the area was $11, although in Griffintown a quarter of the 1,000 families in that sub-section were living on $5.00 a week or less.
