Abstract |
A study of the case of Robert Corrigan (1816 or 1817-1855), an Irish Catholic-born convert to Protestantism, who was killed when attacked by seven or eight of his Irish Catholic neighbours at an agricultural fair in Saint Sylvestre in October 1855. Arrest warrants were issued and rewards were offered, but neither the police nor the army could track down those accused. Finally, in January 1856, several of the accused gave themselves up. A trial was held in February and the defendants were acquitted. The author describes the political repercussions of the Corrigan affair, and the outrage among Upper Canadian Protestants, especially Orangemen, over the acquittal.
