Guy Carleton, Lord Dorchester: An Estimate
|
Abstract |
One of the first attempts to critically evaluate the Canadian career of Guy Carleton (1724-1808), governor of Quebec for two terms in the late eighteenth century. The author begins this essay with the sentence: "Tradition made Carleton divine: research makes him human." A description of Carleton's dealings with French Canadians and with the English-speaking mercantile class in the colony is given.
