Consanguinité et sociabilité dans la zone de Montréal au début du siècle
Abstract
Focusing on in-breeding (e.g., cousin marrying cousin) among French-speaking Catholic Quebecers, the author uses comparative statistics of consanguinity among English-speaking Montreal Catholics. His research is based on the abnormally high rate of consanguinity recorded in the French Catholic parishes within the Archdiocese of Montreal between 1901 and 1932, compared with those of English parishes. The usual explanations of the phenomenon are critically examined by the author. An earlier interpretation of cousin marriages in rural Quebec is tested by controlling for language group and social stratum in consanguineous marriages in turn-of-the-century Catholic Montreal. The author’s study shows that kinship connections among early French-Canadians contained a power that had repercussions on the life of the relationship and gave it an original form.
